Take some time to create a private sanctuary and secret garden outside your home for a special spot to read, relax, or even entertain. If you lack greenspace, don't worry; there are still ways to carve out a little space to create your outdoor oasis with pavement.
Bring a secret garden to life:
In the backyard. If you are fortunate enough to have a backyard, position your garden away from the hub of activity. Pave a space that is big enough for your favorite chair and a couple of potted plants. Surround the space with an arbor or pergola, something that will support climbing plants and vines to add privacy to your outdoor sanctuary.
Near a house. If you have limited outdoor space, use the exterior walls of your home to help conceal and seclude your secret garden. Consider using a trellis to enclose the areas that are open, and fill the space with potted plants, herb gardens, and young shrubs. Suspend a pair of long wind chimes from the eaves of your house to finish your outdoor space.
On a balcony. If you live in an apartment or townhouse, you might want to consider adding your secret garden to your balcony or terrace. First, surround the space that you plan to use with potted plants, large river rocks, or build a half-wall from brick. Consider adding an awning to protect during bright, sunny days. Finish your design with a tabletop fountain that will bring a relaxing, soothing sound to your outdoor space.
Around a patio. Surround your patios with shrubs or hedges, to bring a sense of privacy to your patio. Add a few potted plants, a yard flag or wind-sock, and a brightly-colored indoor/outdoor rug. Invest in a wrought-iron bistro set for the perfect furnishings for your garden, and the ideal spot to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning or a glass of wine after work. If you don't have a patio currently, talk with a paving contractor about the costs of having one installed.
Inside the home. If you are one of those individuals that has no outdoor space, create a secret garden indoors! Use a small corner of your bedroom, a kitchen nook, or a porch for your sanctuary, and fill the space with life by bringing in lots of potted plants. Use light, sheer window treatments to help fill your corner with natural light and keep the furnishings simple and outdoorsy, such as a chaise lounge and a teak table.
Don't let a lack of green space impede your plans to create an outdoor sanctuary or secret garden. There are ways to bring a special spot to life for lounging, recreating, and even entertaining. Use these tips to create your own secret garden to enjoy during mild seasons and warm weather.Share
